Rayman 2 Stairway To Wall

Post by Steo » Thu Mar 15, 2018 12:58 am

I'm not sure if this was discussed before or maybe there's some kind of secret I don't know about, but why does this stairs on The Sanctuary Of Stone And Fire lead to a wall?

I thought it looked very odd. I'm missing 10 Lums and 2 cages on the level that I couldn't find last night so was just wondering.

Literally just thought that's very strange looking how the top step literally has no space from the wall also like not even a platform which makes it look like a mistake.

It's kind of like when a door has no floor or balcony under it yet it's a couple story's off the ground. Doesn't really make sense

Did you intentionally reference the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway to Heaven" with that title or is it just me?

I know what you mean, now that you mention it it does look pretty surreal :)

I only noticed that afterwards but I like how that reference worked out now :)
Also had ACDC - Highway To Hell after reading it a few times but your Led Zeppelin one is closer considering it actually uses the word Stairway

That's probably the weirdest looking thing I've seen in Rayman 2 and the game has bouncing eyes

That stairway. I believe it was made in purpose for aesthetics. Either that or it was ultimately closed due to some problem or level design change. What if the alternative routes we take with the plum was something done much later in the development? If you go to the left path, you face yourself in a "dead end" with a tunnel that takes you to other zone of the Sanctuary. Maybe this was intended to be done in the stairway area but ended scrapped.

Hmm. Maybe. It definitely does look like they changed it as if you look at the wall there the textures don't even match up properly with the rest of the wall. Definitely looks like some last minute changes.

Whatever that stairs is doing there it makes a lot more sense in Revolution. It looks like it's just for aesthetics in this game with an inaccessible area that crumbled. In the original version though it literally looked like they just took something out of the game. Maybe they should've done this in the original game but the fact that they didn't makes it look like that was supposed to lead somewhere.

That makes sense. For once I'm willing to give priority to Revolution's interpretation; they just had trouble creating a proper caved-in passage. Don't know why I never thought about this before though!

It was extremely strange looking to me from the moment I saw that stairs and I just couldn't figure it out, but that's much better now that I know that. It would have just kept bothering me until I managed to figure that out.

Maybe they just couldn't get it to look right in the original game so just settled for the wall thinking nobody will notice or care. About 18 years later someone as fussy as me fixates on it

I think one of Rayman 2's best traits is how it manages to give the illusion that levels are bigger or part of something much larger than they themselves are. I guess it's one of the benefits of having a linear but open design, rather than going for the collectathon or mission-based structure of more open platformers, while not being as restricted as more funnelled and corridor-like platforming games.

Yeah it's really cool how they could do that back then when the consoles weren't as powerful and they didn't have as much space on the disc to store the game data. CD-R were only 700mb and the special GD-Rom the Dreamcast used was 1gb. The dreamcast version only has Raymanian voices but that's likely due to the amount of space them much better textures would take up especially compared to the PS1 version. It's also running in 480i on PS2 and Dreamcast vs the PS1 240p also but I wouldn't take anything away from the PS1 game it's still brilliant :)

The PS2 has 4.7gb DVD and supports Dual Layer so they had all the space in the world for their resources however still limited by GPU/CPU power which likely explains Revolutions framerate but the graphics are unbelievable for a PS2 game.

Anyway back to the point. The illusions they used worked so well like The Sanctuary Of Stone and Fire looks much bigger in every version of the game than it actually is :D

OK so to bring this back with better pictures since I have a capture card now, rather than just holding the phone to the CRT. This is exactly what I meant by the textures not matching up, making it obvious that there was a last minute change of plan.

The Full View:

Actually a lot of the textures in that entire area don't match up, including the next rooms where the giant spider is. I'm wondering was the entire thing changed at the last minute.

Maybe they intended the whole level to be even "branchier" than it ended up being. Maybe they just found the whole thing too confusing.

Whatever their intention was they created a mystery, especially how in Revolution it's a crumbled area. Makes me wonder if they had intentions of using the area then changed their mind or if they just had trouble creating the crumbled area like you said, then fixed it in Revolution.

When I said "branchier", I mean they intended for the path to branch left and right there, with a dead end in one direction (right) and the way out in the other (left). This would be another layer of complexity, in addition to the branching between the right and wrong temples. They may have decided it was too confusing, and so blocked off the path to the left, and made the path to the right loop back to it.
It may not even have been close to the deadline. They may just have blocked off the path and intended to get back to it, but just forgot. That sort of thing happens all the time, even to professionals!

Ah I get what you mean, so it would have been like a mini maze and then one way would have been wrong. We'll never really know but I can't help but just think about it because it's so strange.

Your theories seem more plausible though.

Strange that I never put my input on this. That stairway is one of the many mysteries of that game. Hmm..this reminds me of that “glitch” I made when I was testing Bandicam, what if Rayman was actually able to go that wall, if possible? What could be beyond??? Well maybe that’s just me rambling. :oops2:

Your theory is definitely interesting to read. :)

I'm guessing it was supposed to be a dead-end but they forgot to add extra details so they added piles of wall debris for the Revolution remake.
