Nope, the English word has a voiceless /s/ sound.

I've always pronounced it like a Z myself, but I don't think you're supposed to. :P

You're making me doubt myself now… Globox says it in Rayman 3 when you see the first cage, how does he say it?

He says it more S like, but I just pronounce it kind of Z like, though now that I think of it, it's probably like a hybrid of both letters. Maybe it's like a German Eszett. :P

UPDATE: I mentioned the unused dialogue for Uglette in Origins, then ZelenPixel was wondering what Uglette's name in Russian would have been. I converted the localisation to json with Rayman Control Panel, then went through it and realised Uglette would have been named "Мурлетта". It seems that it isn't a direct translation, which is interesting since Rayman and Globox are pretty much direct translations. It's especially interesting since it was unused also.

So they thought the root of "Uglette" was "ugly"? Charming...

It basically translates back to Murletta from the Russian translation. Interesting choice of wording though to go with an alternative phrase for ugly. Where did the name Uglette actually originate from then?

Yeah I typed that when I was half asleep, my bad. Also, I'm not really sure, I would have assumed it related to ugly too, even though that seems kind of rude towards the character herself.

Yeah, it occurred to me after I posted that that I don't actually know where her name comes from. :oops2: The notion that it's "ugly" feels wrong though. :?

I was wondering if it originated from a French word. I never did like the thought that it could have originated from ugly. Since the names likely originate from French, I doubt it means ugly, since the French word is very different as far as I'm aware.

It's even worse than that, apparently. I found a Youtube playthrough of the Russian Rayman 2 bootleg (don't think there was ever an official release), and it looks like they call them Тинсизы, which is a double pluralization ("Teensieses", sort of like Gollum would say). It actually has both an unvoiced /s/ and a voiced /z/. :oops2:

Such a double-pluralization of certain English words is actually common in Russian, the most prominent example being 'Баксы', for "Bucks" (US dollars).

ZelenPixel wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2019 2:22 pm ya i dont think 2 got translated! 3 did get localized apparently and that probably(havent played it) uses тинси too. that ones official but made by a different team while the ubiart games seem to be localized in house so the localizations arent gonna be all that consistent
Maybe I'm wrong and it was Rayman 3 then, not Rayman 2. :oops2:

It's pretty cool how we have an official name for her despite Rayman 2 never being translated into Russian then. :P

Re: Rayman Origins

It seems some Jungle Run levels can partially load in Origins, but since the files differ slightly, it's far from working properly. RayCarrot, Miles, and myself looked into it for a while yesterday, but the playable character seemed to only spawn in the test levels. Actual levels that do manage to load without crashing the game just seem to say "press any button" with a player 2 headshot on screen, but nothing else happens and a character never spawns.

It would be pretty interesting to get this working properly, it would be cool to be able to play the Jungle Run levels with full control over the player.

On the other hand, English isn't much better when it comes to importing Latin verbs. We stick that silly dental past-participle suffix "-ate" on them, and proceed to add our own dental suffix when we use the verbs in our past tense. So one could say, for example, "hydrated" translates as "watereded".

The only time I remember anything like that was from The Complete Savages, one of them said they were going to be "killeded".
