Sushi

Post by Julia_Patti »

Why don't talk of sushi and rolls? Who likes which ones, who hates which ones, and stuff. Just because.

I absolutely LOVE octopus. Which is very bad of me. :( But the TASTE - so succulent, so flavoursome, so moist... I'm also an eel person, and even humble salmon is on my list.
My favourite kind of roll is probably tamaki, but that's hard to come by. I find hosomaki - at least in the UK - to be weird and soggy, so I prefer a simple nigiri most of the time. Cheaper, too.

Almost same here: I prefer unagi sauce to plain soya one. And saalmooon... mon amour!... :coeur:
As for the rolls - here in Russia hosomaki are quite good; most often I buy a set of tamagoyaki, shiitake and kappa maki :manger:

Obviously I don't eat any of the seafood or meat ones ones but I love sushi otherwise :9 Especially if they have avocado, egg, cucumber and fried tofu. They even use beetroot in one supermarket brand and it makes the rice go all pink and stuff, looks cool. It's just a shame that the best stuff is expensive, we once walked past a Japanese restaurant in London one time and it costs nearly £10 for a vegetarian sushi platter. It looked so damn good though.

Yeah, the prices in London are horrific, even at the average sushi places. The cheapest I can think of is this tiny shop off Trocadero (6 eel/cucumber rolls for £2.50, not shabby) but that's not easy to get to for me.

Business lunch time FTW... or it has no veggie platters?

It's heaven. It's obviously come straight from Jesus's hands himself. Get ready... it's basically a california roll with extra avacado, no cucumber, crab, seeds, and SMOKED SALMON on top with a touch of mayo. It tastes so good you feel like your face can't handle the awesomeness and your body ruptures and you need explosively awesome surgery to take away the craving.

I don't think they have those in England do they? I think they're only Canadian + ...Alaskan since for some reason the state of Alaska is almost above Canada. But yeah seriously, they're awesome. It's like tasting the sea itself. So fresh, but it has an undeniable flavour to it that the Asians use to lure the Caucasians in.

@Xenon:

It's about time you started living off Sushi; make up for lost Sushi meals. :P

In a way, it's good there aren't well-known Alaskan-roll equivalents in the UK. Smoked salmon isn't used in sushi much here, and when it is, it's in that crappy supermarket shit that must never be spoken of. Same with the mayo; supermarkets tend to use it on normal rice, instead of sushi vinegar on sushi rice, giving that unmistakeable "wapanese" flavour. I dread to think what a British version of an alaska roll would taste like. :(

So there, guys. Been in Hyper City today, tasted Alaska roll in the coffee house, and my mark is "average". It still didn't beat my favorite-of-all-times, Bonito maki... :coeur:

In a coffee house? :waaahhh: Who eats Sushi in a coffee house? You have to eat some Canadian Sushi my friend. :P You get Sushi from Sushi restaurants, not a coffee house. Sushi restaurants here are owned by Japanese people, and damn they know what they're doing.

What's in the Bonito Maki?

Because our local sushi restaurant didn't have them. I checked. :P Though who knows, the menu may change with time...
What's in the Bonito Maki?
Cream cheese, marinated daikon, smoked eel inside, and dried tuna flakes outside. I've also heard of another variant with fresh salmon, cucumber and salmon roe.

Interesting, it sounds fairly good, but I don't know if I like eel. I've never tried it.

Lol here, we have a Sushi restaurant every block or two. It's funny how many names they can come up with: "Kiku Sushi, Kapa Sushi, Koko Sushi, Yako Sushi, Take Sushi (I always lol'd at that one, although it's pronounced "Tak-EH"). And many more.
