I heard about this on a Discord group I'm in. Guess that clears things up for me.

+/- My parents have come to visit me today. Kinda unexpected, but I'm happy they came to visit today.

Basically yeah, and while it's not even nearly as hot as most countries, it's still not nice sitting in such heat without so much as a breeze.

- I wrote an e-mail to a game developer called Mediocre (most famous for creating Smash Hit) regarding a problem I have with not being able to restore my Premium purchase even though I bought it and they still haven't answered that e-mail after 3 DAYS of sending it.

Like how they shipped with a stupid hardware bug where the RdRand instruction wasn't behaving as documented? :hehe:

So they apparently need a BIOS update to work properly on Linux?

To boot any Linux distribution using a new systemd version, yes, but even if you're using Windows it's not behaving as it should.

Interesting. I was thinking of getting one but I have to figure out what's going on here. :mefiant:

+ got an old Win98 machine
– no more 98 machine: screen turned black and power supply started emitting a lingering burning stench so I quickly unplugged it

+/- Perhaps the machine shorted out?
- EIther way that sucks to hear, considering how much you like older Windows machines. I wish I had a 98 machine too tbh.

+ At least in that case, another PSU would fix it.
- It would have to be one that has enough molex connectors though.

– I didn’t have a spare AT PSU tho. Also, I didn’t wanna risk frying another PSU if the board itself or something else was the culprit.

Nah, only the power supply died.

Sucks indeed. It annoyed me. I seem to have no luck with such stuff.

+ On a side note, I tried out a 12-string acoustic today! :)

The only other thing I can think of is how the old PSU's had a switch on the back to toggle between US and European voltage, though I'm guessing you would have checked that anyway.

Yeah, I did check it and it was set properly (i.e. 220V). (Could it be due to Slovakia using 230V?)

Also, just in case, there were no loud bangs, just a sudden smell of burning electronics.

That should be ok, Ireland has 230v and those PSU's with 220 written on them still work. If none of the internal cables had been shorting or the insulation had melted away etc., then I'd assume it's just due to the PSU's age that the components have degraded over time.

Yeah that’s the most likely cause of the PSU smelling.

Another reason might’ve been a cheap lower-quality PSU.
