Ohhhh boy, reading that brought back really terrible memories :oops2: At the beginning of TOTL2, you can convert one of the Lavicraft's black lums to break the following cutscene and trigger an IPG this way. I couldn't get this to work, and I spent months trying to figure out why. Shoutout to the G.O.A.T. 1234, who realised that you actually needed the converted lum to heal you to break the cutscene, which meant that you could only trigger the IPG below a certain health threshold :fou3: I had kept trying it at full health.

Haha, the Rayman 3 scoring community was always one I glanced at a distance, y'all were optimising the game like hell and it was awe inspiring if not overwhelming to behold xD. Never have thought this sorta thing would've had much bearing there but I find myself surprised and impressed once again!

The GCN version on the other hand, you'll see consistently always gives back health, regardless of what HP you're at.
You just unlocked an old memory of mine. I remember watching a friend play this game when we were young and assuming his PS2 copy must have been glitching as he wouldn’t always gain health back when grimacing. I had the GameCube version growing up, so I was used to Black Lums always healing you after transforming them back into Red Lums.

I guess this explains it. Interesting find.
Glad that this lil curiosity of mine isn't just me going nuts, and that it's settled things for other folks xD

Speaking of which, I got curious and wanted to confirm what the PS2 version did - see if my memory was correct, and it looks like it is. It follows a similar pattern to the PC version wherein it only gives HP back when your health is beneath a certain threshold:

PC Version

PS2 Version

GameCube Version

Also I noticed that the PS2 version seems to require a moment whenever you hit start before it reaches the pause menu, tho I dunno if this is an emulation quirk or if that brief moment exists on actual hardware.

Needless to say, I wasn't expecting to run thru Rayman 3 twice this year, but science and fun demanded it xD. (I already had a complete save on PC so I just went straight to TotL to get the PC recording)

As someone who recently played the PS2 of R3 on real hardware, I can confirm that this does happen, and gets very annoying after awhile.

Well well, I guess that makes yet another unexpected factoid hath been attained from this impromptu investigation then 😁

I didn't really think that there'd be significant enough differences between Rayman 3 versions, granted in the grand scheme of things it's positively miniscule compared to the menagerie of Rayman 2 variants, but still, more substantial than expected. Makes me wonder if it'd be worth making a log of R3 version differences on the wiki.

Whilst we're on the subject of inconsistency in Hoodlum Havoc, I've been thinking about the voice acting in this game for over fifteen years. Does anyone know why Globox's English voice occasionally sounds completely different? Here's a quick video highlighting some examples (Globox appears from 0:19 onwards):

The obvious answer is that some of his lines weren't recorded by John Leguizamo, but he's the only actor I've ever seen credited for the role when doing research online. It would make sense if Ubisoft had hired someone else to record some of the leftover lines as Mr Leguizamo would presumably have been the most expensive actor involved in the game by quite a wide margin, but I've got no proof of that being the case. Maybe Mr Leguizamo left the project before it was finished? Or maybe he simply decided to competently change his portrayal of the character halfway through production, but I have no proof of that either. Besides, the voices are so different that I find difficult to believe that both came from the person. No offense to Mr Leguizamo, but we're not talking about the vocal range of Frank Welker or Jim Cummings here.

Is anyone privy to what went on here? I'd love to finally be able to put this mystery to rest.

I think that originally this was Globox's voice, but late into production John Leguizamo was brought on the redub him.
Evidence of this comes from the E3 2002 build, where Globox clearly is using a different voice actor.

Once again, this is speaking purely from a scorer's perspective, but differences between versions have been the causes of many headaches over the years :oops2:

"Significant" is maybe a strong word, but there's a couple of differences which do affect the game, like:

- The Black Lum Glitch. PC had an advantage over consoles with regards to how far away you could be from a black lum to convert it, but consoles could convert a single black lum into multiple red lums (and therefore get points multiple times) depending on the timing. Combined with other factors, and depending on how many black lums there were in a level, this could sometimes translate to several thousand points worth of difference between PC and console.
- One of the versions (I think it was GC?) is missing the green can at the end of Fairy Council part 4. In all the other versions it's just there, but on that version, you have to beat the crabs to get it.
- On that same version, the game was running at a lower framerate than other versions. This affected how long the Hecklers' armor would go flying, and made it the only version that could two-cycle Hecklers without externally affecting the framerate.
- On the other hand, the XBox version ran "the smoothest" from what I remember, which made it the hardest version to play with regards to extremely frame-tight combos.

Nothing as huge as the differences between PC/console for Rayman 2 of course, which were basically completely different games, but different enough to be felt a lot of times.

Reminds me of when I first played Rayman 3 on Dolphin and when I was in DOTK7 I was jabbing the grimace key after beating the Hoodstormers and thinking "where the heck did all the +30 points come from" and then I realized later on that it was a glitch. I think aside from DOTK7 the only other place I clearly remember this glitch happening was in HH4 when fighting the Hoodlums from the Horrible Machine.

I never really noticed this for some reason, I always just beat the crabs up before i moved forward and assumed that it showed up after I beat them. I might check this out at a later point whenever I decide to play Rayman 3 again. :oops2:

Sorry, I should be appreciative of you sharing this with me, but I'm just shocked by the 'Holy Sheet' exclamation that was originally planned to appear in the game.

Yeah this is very common, not the first time the voice actor is changed through the game development.
Also, I knew about this for years, but it still amazes me how different were some details if you compare them to the final game! The sound effects, the crowns as placeholders, the HUD...

Cf. Richard Lord doing the placeholder voice for Wheatley in Portal 2 (and the disproportionate backlash when it was announced that Steven Merchant would be doing it in the final game :?)

Also, I don't think I'd seen that particular demo before, thanks for (re-)sharing! The opening of the Bog of Murk is downright eerie without the music and the initial Bégoniax confrontation… Also, I presume it was a mistake that Razoff says "the faster you run, the sooner you die" in one-on-one combat as opposed to the rifle-scope sequences, which they forgot to fix in the demo…

I've always found it weird that in the ending cutscene, we see Rayman and Globox falling from the sky, when before this they were shown on solid ground.
Does anyone have an explanation for this? I want to sleep help me

To be fair, there is really no implication the the Tower exploded besides R&G falling.

Lol no, I wasn't pretending to sound rude :fou:. I'm not making fun, I just can't find another explanation. I highly doubt they both jumped into the void of their own free will.

Because the developers were desperate for an excuse to bring back the Squab. Good thing too, as the Squab is clearly the best character in the entire Rayman franchise.

Globox was technically not on solid ground, last we see him before the cutscene he was still on the Armaguiddon, so maybe it exploded. I can't really think of a reason Rayman might be falling though tbh since he actually was on solid ground.

I accidentally got killed doing this, and it seems it wasn't an exception as it always happened. I don't know if this also happens on the other versions, but in my case I realized about it on the PS2 version. It seems you can get insta-killed (or almost killed) by a Heckler in the weirdest way possible! Once you hit the Heckler with the fully charged first, before the enemy gets its armor back, place behind the Heckler and do a somersault towards its back.
