Armored Toad too.. I think most if not all bosses are going to have purple eyes throughout the whole game
Ion know, It's for us to find out 8)
Doesn't it indicate that they're possessed?

Sounds about right! :P

Being a barbarian and a princess are not mutually exclusive. "Barbarian" just means a non-Greek / non-Roman tribe from when the Greeks / Romans were (supposedly) the pinnacle of civilization. Non-Greeks and non-Romans could have kings / queens too, so why not princesses?

RayGamer99 wrote: Sat Jul 25, 2026 12:26 pmI think they called it the Mystic Mesa for two reasons:
  • 1: Since all the worlds in Legends are being treated as proper locations in Retold rather than just paintings, they had to come up with names for them that sounded like real areas. When you think about it, "Fiesta de los Muertos" isn't really a location, is it?
  • 2: I imagine they're trying to make these worlds fit in with the rest of Rayman's world now, so they wanted to give them all names that have a similar feel to those of previous locations. It might not fit the world the best, but in a Glade with places like the Marshes of Awakening and the Land of the Livid Dead, a name like "Mystic Mesa" sounds like it belongs there, doesn't it?
Ultimately, these are just names and you can call these places whatever you want - their old names, new names, or some other name you have for them - but I like all the names that they've given the Legends worlds. Retold has made these places feel like real locations that characters would live in and travel to, and I love that the devs put the time and effort into doing that. :)
You misunderstand, I wasn't trying to complain about the new names. Yes, I'm not a fan of them, and yes, I think they sound like ChatGPT names - but that's beside the point. Names like The Stinkbog and The Old Teensie Kingdom somewhat fit the worlds they are attached to, but this is not the case for Mystic Mesa... at all. I don't see any link between this name and the place, so I'm wondering why they chose this one? Of course, I agree that Mystic Mesa is a name that kind of fits in the Rayman universe, and as you say, this is the reason why the names were changed in the first place. But for this one it feels like they picked a Glade-y name first and then randomly assigned it to a Legends world.

They're calling this place "mystic" when the only mystic elements are very superficial views of the Día de los Muertos tradition, or a "mesa" where the geography of the place is one of its least notable aspects. The name is so nondescript that you could put it on a Halloween-themed world or something and it would fit just as little.
If they needed it to be a location name, then why didn't they use something like "Kitchen of the Dead" or "Cocina de los muertos"? Why not make it an extension of Gourmand Land's Infernal Kitchens named "Infernal RIng" or whatever based on the Luchador arena theme and the obvious Infernal Kitchens similarities? Surely that would have helped with making it feel more connected with the rest of the series? :P

The only reason I can think of why they would want to avoid referencing Día de los Muertos or food in the world's name is if they wanted to make it a point that this environment is not perpetually in that mode - that in the lore, it is a recent transformation or an abnormal state for this world, perhaps caused by the villain (the luchador). The world map also seems to depict it as mostly a desert environment, so they avoided making it food/day of the dead themed even there - making it look completely different from the new footage or from the original game. Very strange.
Still, whatever the in-universe reason, the issue remains that this name does not fit the playable environment at all and even if this is all part of the plan, the name should have at least contained a hint that this is a Día de los Muertos/food world. As it is, the name says nothing at all, it just gives the impression that, unlike what you say, not a lot of time or effort was put into all this. :(

Indeed, so now that Barbarians are canon in Rayman's world, and so is Greece Mount Elysium, logic dictates that Rayman must also be a Barbarian. Or Greek, take your pick. :hap:

I do have a drawing lying around somewhere of Barbara trying to talk to Olympia, who replies in Koine Greek that she doesn't understand what she is saying :hap:

The thing is, for all its flaws and questionable connection to the Rayman lore, RL arguably played a non-negligible part in driving my interest in historical linguistics back in 2015 :hap:

How dare you being interested in linguistics due to Barbara when you could have been interested in ducklings due to the existence of Tily?

(Or big bootied ladies due to the existence of Origins' Betilla)

Yes, it looks like the bosses are no longer inherently evil, but possessed by that mysterious hooded villain instead. At least, they all share the same purple glowing eyes.

You know, this is actually how I imagine the world works in-universe. The way I see it, the Día de los Muertos-themed environments shown in Legends is simply the way that the people of the Mystic Mesa celebrate the Fiesta de los Muertos holiday. Perhaps other worlds do smaller-scale celebrations for it, but in that world specifically they go all-in on it. This would make it make more sense why they avoided naming the world after the holiday, since that is temporary and the world itself probably isn't permanently in that state. The areas explored in Legends might just be one part of the Mystic Mesa and the rest of it doesn't have as many decorations tied to the holiday - Mariachi Madness and the end of the Stinkbog's dragon flight would certainly support that theory.

Sure, maybe they should have chosen a name that implied Mexican ties considering stuff like the Mariachis and Luchadores are probably there year-round, but if all of the decorative environments are just part of temporary festivities or only make up one area of the world, then the Mystic Mesa's name still works well enough in my opinion. :)

Yep; we've seen Grunderbite, the Armored Toad, El Luchador, and even the Mechanical Dragon (in one shot of the reveal trailer) with the possessed eyes, and the Bubble Dreamer's description of Grunderbite being the protector of the Old Teensie Kingdom does mean that the bosses are no longer evil by nature. I like this new angle, since some of the bosses and enemies didn't really seem like the hostile type (e.g. El Luchador and the aforementioned Mariachis and Luchadores), and I'm intrigued to see how they are described in their normal states.

Though I do wonder why the Mechanical Dragon, a robot seemingly built by the Dark Teensy, needed to be possessed? If he's working under the new villain, then it shouldn't require those extra measures, right? And how on earth are they going to explain Hades' Hand? :P
