Music is also something that generates and moves a lot of money, and most artists derive a large portion of their income from digital streams (Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, etc.). Since music is now much more accessible to everyone, artists are able to release CDs and vinyl records for those who want a physical copy of their work. What am I getting at with all this? Basically, they’re phasing out the physical format just because they feel like it.
It's (yet another) anti-consumer move by PlayStation, which is willing to make the stupidest move possible just to keep the competition alive. First of all, it would be nice if they didn't include free to play games with microtransactions in their digital download statistics, but hey, I get that they use them to inflate their numbers. Second, do they really think their digital store is THAT good? You have games from 5 years ago that STILL COST €70, are you telling me that people prefer that to paying more than half the price for the physical copy, or buying it used? Not to mention that their return and cancellation policy is terrible (to put it mildly). All this while keeping in mind that digital options on PC, while not perfect, are 50 million times better than the junk PlayStation has.
Because what they're doing with their store is also fantastic... Announcing this at the same time they're announcing that the PS3 and PS Vita stores are closing! The person in charge of this deserves a promotion. Because now, anything you've bought digitally on PS3 and PS Vita, how long will you be able to play it? How long will you be able to download it? Because their little statement doesn't say it outright, but you'll understand that downloading the games you've bought isn't something that seems permanent. I’d like to point out that this is a company that has removed movies purchased by users due to licensing issues, so I think they’re capable of doing the same with games.
PlayStation wrote:[...]To ease the transition, players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future.
What I'm saying doesn't mean that the digital format should cease to exist. Every once in a while, like when you see a comet in the sky, PlayStation has some really great deals in its store that are truly worth it. You also have to keep in mind that many indie games don't get a physical release until they've proven to be somewhat successful. A prime example is Hollow Knight... And I'm not sure if it's concerning that their physical edition is much nicer than those of top tier games, like GTA 5, which doesn't even come with a map in its PS5 edition anymore.
I'd like to share a quick final thought... In the past, consoles were a more convenient and affordable option for gaming compared to a PC. PCs were more powerful, but they were more expensive and required tweaking the settings to get optimal performance. Right now, with console prices on the rise, paid online services, and games limited to digital licenses, what reasons are there to buy a console instead of a PC or a Steam Machine? Sony has made some very questionable decisions, but this has been the last straw. If they keep up with these shitty policies, PC will probably be my next gaming platform.
