Article name change

As I'm writing up a style guide, I've checked this article, and I think we should change the article's name to something like, Rayman (original game) or something. Let's be honest, hardly any first games in series have the number 1 in it, and while it's easier to call it that, it doesn't look professional to me. -- RKartHead.gif StaceyW 13:53, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I do like reffering the original Rayman game as Rayman 1, but I do agree with StaceyW. Evil Rayman 11:50, 27th September 2009
There should be a "Rayman (game)" article for R1, and a "Rayman" article for the character. Perhaps there should also be a "Rayman (series)" article. Spiraldoor 16:06, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Rayman (game) already redirects to Rayman 1. I don't think we should do anything else. — Hunchman801 16:37, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I know this discussion was settled over a year ago, but lately I've been having second thoughts about it. I think we're actually the only wiki that has the first instalment of our series located at a page with a '1' in the title, and it does look sort of unprofessional. We never even refer to is as Rayman 1 in articles, just the original Rayman game or something to that effect. What's the point of locating it at Rayman 1 if we're never even going to refer to it as Rayman 1 anywhere on the wiki? I'm leaning towards Rayman at the moment. —Spiraldoor 00:10, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah Spiral is right. Rayman 1 is a name given by people to recognize the game, but Ubisoft named the game just Rayman. — RaySpola 20:44, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Not to revive this debate, but I thought it was interesting how the title 'Rayman 1' seems to have become semi-official in the last year. Many of the developer interviews we saw around the time of Origins referred to the original game as 'Rayman 1' – Ancel himself did, on at least one or two occasions. It's also called 'Rayman 1' in the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2, when you talk to Brainox in the Globox Village. —Spiraldoor IconSpiralDoor.png 15:41, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Lists in levels

Could we possibly put in a list in every part of a level saying how many powers/double powers/super powers there are, how many enemies there are, how many lives there, ect. Evil Rayman 11:50, 27th September 2009

Sounds like a great idea, but it's also a lot of work. What about starting to list them all on the forums, so that we can decide later how to put it in form? — Hunchman801 16:37, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I'll do that soon when I have some time. Evil Rayman 17:37, September 28th 2009

Soundtrack

Noticed that a section about the soundtrack was added, and suddenly wondered if anyone else was aware of the Rayman Demo Tape track. It's an early prototype recording from when the Jaguar version was being developed, and features Remi Gazel on the piano playing various pieces from the game, including an unused track. Am I the only one that knows of this?
--Electoon Fly.png 14:18, 1st January 2012 (GMT)
This is news to me. Do you have a copy of this recording, or know where we can find one online? —Spiraldoor IconSpiralDoor.png 15:41, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I also had no idea of this. It would be great we being able to see footage from it. --Sparkle.gifHarukaSparkle.gif 17:53, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Sure, should I post a link here or send a PM?
--Electoon Fly.png 00:02, 2nd January 2012 (GMT)
A link right here will be fine. —Spiraldoor IconSpiralDoor.png 00:08, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Sure: [1]
--Electoon Fly.png 00:23, 2nd January 2012 (GMT)
It does sounds different, that's for sure in the first part. Eat at Joe's has got a different instrument, the Magician tune is more piano-alike. --Sparkle.gifHarukaSparkle.gif 02:14, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
This is really strange – do you have any more information? How did you get your hands on this tape, and did it come with documentation of any kind? —Spiraldoor IconSpiralDoor.png 14:12, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
How come you haven't posted this on PC anytime before? As for what genres the whole soundtrack is best described I'll have to go through it all again but the least I think most of it is fusion of two styles or more. That and how very, very 90's it is. --Cairnie 12:20, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Because I thought everyone knew about it. It only occurred to me when this soundtrack section was added that no-one ever spoke of it (the demo tape) that I realised that I should probably ask if anyone else knew. It actually comes from an old Jaguar promotional tape which features some strange Rayman Beta footage (hmm...considering no-one knew of the video, it might be of use to the Rayman Early Development article...). As for the amazing soundtrack of the final game, I think it in a bunch of different genres, varying from track to track. For example, some of it is quite classical sounding (the violin piece in Picture City), others have a large brass band sound (a lot of the Band Land music, Mr.Sax's theme in particular), some have a rock vibe (Mr. Dark's Theme and Moskito's Nest)etc. I don't think it sounds OTT 90's though (with maybe the exception of the main theme of the Jaguar version). You should consult the soundtrack of Classic Sonic games (in particular Sonic 3) for that ;)
--Electoon Fly.png 20:19, 2nd January 2012 (GMT)
We had no knowledge about the demo tape. However, I wonder if the footage of Rayman on it corresponds to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn4CBG8lhw4&list=PL31F43A62B9154145&index=1&feature=plpp_video --Sparkle.gifHarukaSparkle.gif 22:15, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Nope, it's from an older beta then that. Judging from the footage I can see, it's very early stuff from around just after the 'demo version' that was leaked in 2008, as it shares similar traits with it. --Electoon Fly.png 22:44, 2nd January 2012 (GMT)
Could you upload the footage to YouTube? Also, does the tape have any interesting packaging or labels (you seem to be pretty sure that it was Rémi Gazel on the piano)? —Spiraldoor IconSpiralDoor.png 13:38, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
There seems to be a confusison that I own the tape! I unfortunately don't, although it would be cool. It's just a promotional tape for the Atari Jaguar in general, and it's been on Youtube for years. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Hsohjvqk0I (Rayman starts at 8:00 in). Also, I'm pretty sure it is Rémi Gazel on the piano, as it has his distinct playing style (if you compare the demo tape to other non-Rayman works of his), and it just makes sense :P. I should also probably write up about the beta footage on the Early Development article --Electoon Fly.png 16:08, 5th January 2012 (GMT)
I think I've seen that video afterall, before. Isn't the Magician delivering a map to Rayman? --Sparkle.gifHarukaSparkle.gif 17:40, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Some help for the manual upload

I believe I need some explanation of how it works. --Sparkle.gifHarukaSparkle.gif 15:30, 14 June 2014 (CEST)

At the moment, the Wiki doesn't auto-generate a thumbnail, so I've had to make my own, as you can see:
R1 Manual FRThumb.png
The next step was to get a link that goes directly to the manual, not the manual file page, for the Jag manual, that link was: ::http://raymanpc.com/wiki/script-en/images/d/db/R1_Manual_FR.pdf
Finally, I put the thumbnail as the image, and put the direct link in the description, like so:
::
Hopefully that helps, and hopefully we'll find an extension or other means in the future which will negate the need for the above method, but until then, that's the way to do things. --Sig5 2TEST.png 15:58, 14 June 2014 (CEST)
Thank you for the explanation. I'll see if I can make it work later with other manual. --Sparkle.gifHarukaSparkle.gif 21:06, 15 June 2014 (CEST)
Please categorise all images, including manual scans. Scans > Manual scans sounds appropriate. —RRRGBAIcon8.pngRRRGBAIcon0.gifRRRGBAIcon1.png 19:33, 17 June 2014 (CEST)

PS1 US Release Date

Where did this come from? Most other sources site this as being released on 09/09/1995, which makes way more sense considering it was a launch title and the PS1 was released in the US on the same (09/09/1995) date. It being 01/09/1995 makes no sense. (Jaguar date might also be wrong, many sources say it was released on the 1st rather than the 8th). Ribshark (talk) 17:44, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

PC vs. PS1 screenshots

I was checking in on the "Which version is your favorite" poll from the R1 topic, and the PS1 version beats the PC version by a sizable amount. In the favorite Rayman game survey, the voters preferred the PS1 level design over the PC design (although the difference is not that large). I'm bringing this up because of a proposal that the PC screenshots on the article should be replaced with better quality screenshots from the PS1 version. --Ray RayWiki sig.png 2:05, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

Replacing with PS1 screenshots sounds like a good idea since they are in higher resolution and is probably the version most people are familiar with. We should however keep a few PC screenshots to show the differences, like the Moskito coloring etc. --Carrot signature.png 07:43, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
Alright, sounds like a plan! --Ray RayWiki sig.png 16:52, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

Seperate Article for the Jaguar Release

One thing I noticed while browsing the wiki over the last few days is that informaton on the Jaguar version of the game is lacking on a lot of pages. Some of the later Rayman ports such as Rayman DSI and Rayman Advance have their own articles, despite having less differences in than the Jaguar version of the game, which is effectively a prototype of the other ports. I propose a seperate article is made for the Jaguar version that is linked to here, that fully documents the differences in each world compared to the other ports, and adds some details on it's development. I would happily write it, but since it's a large change to the Rayman 1 tree of articles (being the only 1995 port to have it's own page if I go ahead), I thought I'd raise it as a suggestion first :) --Electoon Fly.png 17:21, 5th September 2017 (GMT)

I was considering doing the same for the PlayStation version on Rayman 2, though eventually thought it would be best to leave the differences for the more specific articles, like the level ones. However, that makes finding this information harder since it's more fragmentet (and there's no place to write general info, such as music, visual and animation changes). I did write a section at the bottom of the article about some general differences between ports, though there was no way I could easily cover them all there without making this article too long. The Jaguar version is indeed the most unique one with a ton of differences. I think the only reason it doesn't currently have its own article is due to it being one of the first versions of the game (and it not having a different name, which oddly enough is usually a big reason for new articles), therefor considered by many to be the "original" version (which is of course the version which should be the general one for the main Rayman 1 article). However, the PlayStation and PC versions have since become the most common ones, and were also released during the same time period. So generally speaking I think the PlayStation and PC (as well as Saturn I guess) versions are the original versions of "Rayman 1". As a conclusion, I'm personally fine with having a separate article for it unless anyone else has any objections. Also, I think it's best not the refer to it as a "port" in that case since it's not really a port of any previous version. It should be enough to call it the "Atari Jaguar version". --Carrot signature.png 17:35, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
This is a bit complicated given how the Jaguar version is a distinct version of Rayman 1, rather than a port or remake. While it's true that most probably consider the PS1/Saturn or the PC version to be the most definitive, I think we should try to avoid having a position on the matter. A compromise we could try would be using a sub-page (the link being a suggestion of a name for such a sub-page) to document the differences in the Jaguar version. It allows us to maintain one whole article to encompass the three versions of Rayman 1, while retaining neutrality in regards to the subject of a definitive version. --Sig5 2TEST.png 00:03, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
How so? Rayman Arena and Rush both have separate articles and they're not ports. All different enough versions of Raving Rabbids (GBA, DS and Java) have their own articles. I think separate articles for game versions should be made when there are enough differences from the main version. As for making a sub-page I'm not sure how well that would work. It wouldn't follow any previous style we've used on the wiki and it'd be rather hard to find through for example a search. Having a "Rayman 1 (Atari Jaguar)" article seems more obvious and easier finding and it's similar to how these occurrences have been dealt with in the past. As for a "definitive version" I don't feel that this is what it's about. It's rather which version should be considered the main one, the original so to say. You could of course argue that the Jaguar version is the original in which case it makes sense to have it here with the other versions. But at the same time the PS1/Saturn and PC versions are the ones which Ubisoft have continuously mentioned as the originals, the ones they've ported and re-released and used for screenshots, live streams etc. Although the Jaguar version may have been released during the same year, it still feels like a different version, the Jaguar adaptation so to say. Most changes in this version were made to accommodate the lower use of storage on a cartridge and the limitations of the system compared to other disc based consoles and systems.
Those are just my thoughts on the matter though. If we decide against having a separate article I think it'd be best to create a new section on this one for the Jaguar version at the very least. The only issue with that would be that the article would get a bit to long, something which already feels like an issue. --Carrot signature.png 08:30, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
I do agree that given the amount of differences in the Jaguar version, having an article dedicated to it would be more effective. Perhaps we have this current article as a generic catch-all for all three original Rayman 1 variants (Jaguar, PS1/Saturn, PC), and link to new articles (if necessary) which are specific to the relevant version? --Sig5 2TEST.png 15:06, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
