The Sanctuary of Rock and Lava is a level in Rayman 2: The Great Escape. It is the last of the sanctuaries to bear one of the Four Masks of Polokus, which is actually beneath the sanctuary, and is the second one to be filled with lava. In Rayman Revolution it's called Beneath the Lava Sanctuary or Beneath the Sanctuary of Lava. It also features a new mini-boss called Chenille, a larger, reddish version of the shadow creatures.

This sanctuary is located deep in the marshlands, and inside the temple are steams of lava and thickets of nettles. Rayman can avoid these by standing on floating nenuphars which carry him though the nettle pits, but eventually either wither away or get burnt.

The level continues as a separate level set beneath the sanctuary, where the Lava mask is really hidden.

Original version

The Spiral Door in the Hall of Doors which takes Rayman to the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava

Phase 1

The level begins in a swamp. An entrance to the Walk of Power can be found nearby to the left. Rayman soon passes through the swamp and finds himself inside the Sanctuary itself. Inside he finds a nenuphar which takes him to the lower floor, and he must break several obstacle walls along the way. Once there, he has to jump across some collapsing pillars and hit on a switch to get through the door.

Phase 2

Once through the door, Rayman finds himself in a room with a rotating stone structure floating above a pool of lava. Once he climbs it and makes his way to the next room, he must hit a switch in a room full of attacking caterpillars, and quickly jump the door temporarily opened by the switch. Rayman must them make his way through a lava-filled passage where deadly shifting walls threaten to push him off their platforms. At the end, a cage containing a Teensie can be found. Once freed, the Teensie creates a Door to take Rayman back to the Hall.

Dreamcast version

Eig lurks underwater near the log with the Piranhas and Jumping eyes in the marsh section of Phase 1, with only his antennae visible. If Rayman approaches him, he will rise out of the water.

In addition to that, Some Robo-pirates have been added throughout this level, presumably to make it more difficult.

This level remains largely the same. However, the section before the entering warp portal is omitted. The small area beyond the eyeball room present in the other versions is also omitted.

PlayStation 2 version

This level remains mostly the same, but with a few differences. In this version, it has been renamed Beneath the Lava Sanctuary, although this makes no significant difference. In Phase 1, in the room containing eyeballs, Rayman must battle Boss Chenille. In the first room of Phase 2 (with the rotating stone structure), a cage and several yellow lums cannot be obtained without dying, until Rayman receives the permanent power to fly over lava at the end of The Lava Sanctuary. However, by falling into the lava and restarting at the beginning of Phase 2, it is possible to avoid a second trip through this level.

A lot of ice is found in the GBC adaptation

In the Game Boy Color adaptation, the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava directly follows the Precipice, and this is where the fourth mask of Polokus is located. Surprisingly, it mixes lava and ice.
