ChronicTraitor wrote: Fri Oct 17, 2025 1:30 am Careful going back in time, you might wind up at Regal Ruin! I actually really like Sonic R, more so the Saturn version than the PC-to-GC port on Gems Collection, Metal Sonic makes the coolest sci-fi hover noise in the original. They changed it to an overheating computer fan in Gems, which is probably what the PC they ported it from sounded like. (Also I noticed that edit, nothing can surprise me. :winkgrin:) {This time you won't notice me there nyeheheheheh!}

[...]

It says a lot that in Shadow Generations' jukebox, I could only take 30 seconds of the main theme before cutting it off. I hadn't heard it in years and just couldn't keep listening to it. Ironically, Rail Canyon's level set was really easy for me because of Heroes, and Neo was great to see again. So I can technically still appreciate Heroes for the little things.

Thanks again for all the birthday wishes, guys. :hap:
I oddly loved R as a kid and unlocking all the characters it had to offer (yes, even the one all the creepypasta kiddies like to freak out over despite it not being that scary :hap: ), but aside from the amazing soundtrack, I struggle to enjoy it now :oops2:
But heh, it's sort of fine once you get into the counterintuitive mindset that you're actually steering cars that can jump, and learn how to exploit its unusual mechanics and level design.
One funny thing I once did was emulating Sonic R from my copy of the Sonic Gems Collection... meaning my PC was emulating a PS2 game emulating a PC game ported from a Saturn game, for a top tier quality experience! :P
And my, what a good eye! 👀

As much as I love the Sonic Heroes theme, I can fully understand why someone wouldn't like it. It suffers from similar flaws to We Can, which is one of the very few Sonic songs that I listen to super rarely because I don't like it that much... :?
It's pretty telling that it's the only song in the mainline 3D Sonic games that they had to replace with another one for the final boss, not even an orchestral version of it like since 06...

Sonic R's soundtrack was never really my barrel of plum juice; aside from Super Sonic Racing and maybe Back in Time, I'm not a huge fan of the songs. Super Sonic Racing was great for the game's main theme, but I really don't think every (or any) stage needed to be set to a 90s vocal track. :tssk:

Add that to the fact that these were used for a Sonic the Hedgehog racing game, of all things, and you might understand why I don't quite jibe with the music. :confus:

I haven't played the game (and I don't really see myself doing that for lack of interest and ways of doing it), but from what I've seen, Sonic R actually doesn't seem that different from Rayman M/Arena (or I guess Rayman Rush in this case since there was no such thing as a Battle mode in that game ); at a glance, I think some of the course layouts and their shortcuts are more confusing than they really need to be, but it still looks pretty fun. Wonder if we'll ever get a Rayman M/Arena sequel, or at least a remake/remaster of the game...

Boy am I glad they did that! Despite how much I like Sonic Heroes, I don't think it would've worked that great for Metal Overlord; What I'm Made Of is such a better fit! :mryellow:

To be fair, Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World also didn't have remixes of their main themes for the final boss - unless we want to say Sonic 4's title screen is the main theme of Generations :fou: - but then again the former didn't really have one to begin with.

That barrel of plum juice turn of phrase is just... *CHEF'S KISS* 🤌 :nostalgic:
But... the game was made in the 90s... :hap:

Now I gotta go listen to Diamond in the Sky and Number One while in a CAH! :bad: - No, wait... ALL of the songs! 8)

Oh trust me, M - Arena are BILLIONS of times better than Sonic R, the way they play don't even feel close! I'd rather replay even Rush over R!
Those dump truck-tier controls in a non-sensical level design and the ~15 minutes worth of actual content aren't really something worth ever experiencing in a lifetime, you aren't missing out! :noel:
And yeah, I've been waiting forever for that, but considering modern Ubisoft can't even figure out wtf is even a "Rayman 1", "2", or "3", I doubt they'd even remember that one multiplayer spin-off they once made :hap: (nope, totally never happened, never existed :pfff: )

Same! :mryellow:

But... both Generations and Lost World didn't have a theme song with lyrics... :pardon2: Unless you mean-... Oh... wait... Oh my... OMG PARALLEL UNIVERSES CONFIRMED! Do they have Sonic Adventure 3 and Ramen 4 in yours??? :paranormal:

Sonic R is a very simple game, obviously. One of the few 3d multiplayer Sonic games that allows you to free roam around the tracks, though. I never really was afraid of the doll since his stats were really bad, even in a game like R. Makes the game even easier once you unlock him since the unlockable characters replace the default opponents. And yeah, the music is great. Super Sonic Racing still shows up sometimes.

Also gotta love cross generational emulation, that sounds pretty ridiculous. (I also couldn't help but quote The Supernatural from SA2.)

Yeah, We Can is a song I skip over entirely if I'm listening to anything Heroes related, because despite the loathing for it, not all of the ost is bad. We Can is just not very good. You'd think the team the game was named after would at least have a passable theme. :mefiant:

You know that's a really good point about Heroes, that the theme isn't used for the last boss, unlike...literally every Sonic game before/after. Even Shadow used I Am. I'd argue We Can is actually worse than Sonic Heroes' Theme, but the loathing makes me unable to listen to either.

That's more than enough rambling out of me though, I don't mean to derail the birthday train here! :oops2:

Thanks!

It's the 6th that mine occurs on, but it's only an hour away in my timezone so it's close enough. Jonster pretty much used further ahead timezones to wish it even earlier.

Rats! I was wondering if it was today or tomorrow on your end, and I just guessed it was today because of your response to Jonster. :oops2:
