In France we have so called allocations and even if you don't work you'll get money (It's a bit more complex in fact but I guess you understand how it works). The problem is it should be just for a short time when you're searching for a you job but lot of people are profiting on that system.
That's why I wasn't happy to say it. I dunno about Ireland, but that's not the way of it. There's no injuring on purpose to get more money - perhaps in some families, but hell, as much as white or black people would do it, in all honesty. The Roma who come here do so because they don't want to get profitable by theiving and begging, which is the way it has to be done back in Romania. To suggest they maim their kids to get rich is... well, why single out Roma? What about other beggars, hmm? I guess that attitude just really, REALLY riles me up.

The number of deformed Romanian beggars I’ve seen is much higher than the number of deformed non-Romanian beggars.

Spiraldoor took Roma as an (unfortunately) well-knows example but as you said, white or black people would also do it for money. I saw children abandoned by there parents because they don't wanted to pay foods fee or somethings (they actually CAN, though). It's just as disgusting as maiming kids.

I can tell they’re Romanian because they look like one of these guys:
Their deformations are usually in the form of underdeveloped or misdeveloped limbs. Many of them have arms or legs that look like those of small children, which I’ve always assumed was caused by some kind of severe and untreated damage to the limb early in life. I remember one guy who had one of his feet turned backwards, which was kind of weird...

Poor little kid... Though to be honest, those things sound like plain malnourishment, or simply disability. Of course it could be the result of abuse, but there are many other causes too.
Perhaps they were Hungarian. That doesn’t change the fact that these deformed beggars are all of the same ethnicity. I have no vested interest in proving that it was the Romanians, though you seem quite keen on finding other explanations...
It remains me the beggars we have in France. Most of them are from Muslim sects and ask you money, explaining you they are deaf and/or dumb. Because or those jerks, I'm very suspicious and I do not give money to anyone (though I don't know if it's a sect or a real guy in need). Life is hard and unfair because of profiteers.

It's pretty much the same for me, you just can't trust those people.
