Illegal copy of Wikipedia article
Hi there! I noticed that you copied part of the Rayman article on Wikipedia under the "List of characters in the Rayman series" article here. This is actually illegal as RayWiki is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0, a noncommercial license, while Wikipedia uses CC BY-SA 4.0, which requires copied content to be licensed under the same terms, or a compatible license, something that CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 is not.
Moreover, I'm not sure I understand the value of such an article here, since its goal on Wikipedia is essentially to provide short descriptions for characters that do not warrant a full-blown article there, but on RayWiki they are all notable enough to have their own articles.
Regardless, I must delete the article due its illegal nature. Thank you for your understanding. —![]()

- Actually, I created that part on Wikipedia, as you can see by the IP address, so I rewrote a similar copy on this wiki but with various differences, not the same, so I wouldn't say it was illegal. But that's my opinion, at least. Anyway, as I said, it's not a real exact copy of what I wrote on Wikipedia, you can see they have differences, both little and significant, in the content. - Well, first of all I wanted to create a page on this wiki myself since I never had the chance to do it, and since I already created that section on Wikipedia before, I decided to transform that section in a page here myself but with differences so to not engage in that same kind of problem you brought to my attention. Because, according to my experience as editor on other wikis and even on TV Tropes, the content from other wikis and encyclopedias can be used on others as long as it is not created as an exact copy but with differences like name of paragraphs or even page, different wordings, more content (like in this case) or less content. - The alterations you describe correspond to the definition of a derivative work in US copyright law:
- A "derivative work" is a work based upon one or more preexisting works, such as a translation, musical arrangement, dramatization, fictionalization, motion picture version, sound recording, art reproduction, abridgment, condensation, or any other form in which a work may be recast, transformed, or adapted. A work consisting of editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications which, as a whole, represent an original work of authorship, is a "derivative work".
- And since the copyright owner of the original work also owns the rights to derivative works, this means that such changes cannot be used to justify a copy to another wiki with an incompatible license. The only thing I'm not sure about is how the original author releasing the same content under various licenses actually works. —

- I'm just talking about personal experience as editor on other wikis and encyclopedias. Also, Wikipedia articles are created by volunteers and are of public dominion, they don't have a copyright nor are private properties, even anonymous users can create them, and are accepted by an elite staff of other volunteers Who are not owners of Wikipedia and the articles users create or edit. The reason they request to not write exact identical copies (at least not all of them request it) of articles and sections from other sites is because they cannot be proven to be plagiarism. Also, since I'm the one who created that section on Wikipedia before writing the other version here (just with more content since this is a Rayman totally focused on Rayman franchise and with slightly different wording in occasional points), why would be this a problem? - Pardon me, it's been 15 days now. May I have the permission now, after all the explanation written above, to restore the page I recently created, please? Purple bubble (talk) 15:15, 27 November 2023 (CET)
- Because of the aforementioned licensing issues, it is better if, for now, you re-create it under your own namespace, as "User:Purple bubble/List of characters in the Rayman series", and if you include a notice explaining that you are the original author of the content in question. —

- So, I must add User: Purple Pubble in the title of the article? Or you mean I must create the article as some sort of essay on my own user page? Purple bubble (talk) 17:30, 28 November 2023 (CET)
- Ok Purple bubble (talk) 19:42, 28 November 2023 (CET)
- I can't find the copy of the page, not in my nor your chronology. Is it normal? Purple bubble (talk) 19:54, 28 November 2023 (CET)
- You’ve got to create the page manually; just click on the following link and it’ll take you to the editor: User:Purple bubble/List of characters in the Rayman series – Fifo (talk) 20:16, 28 November 2023 (CET)
