Sony to end physical PlayStation game disc production in January 2028
Today, Sony published a blog post announcing they’re going to end manufacturing physical media for PlayStation.

Surely I’m not the only one dreading it, am I?

Oh well, they're already selling boxes with CDs that don't contain the full game, and even when they do, those often are glitchy versions that require downloading patches anyway. Now we'll just be buying empty boxes instead!

This is very disappointing, especially considering their current track record with digital media you buy on their platform, since they'll pulling purchased shows and movies from people's libraries as well?
Re: Sony to end physical PlayStation game disc production in January 2028
Looks like I'll be exclusively buying games from Steam then for as long as Gabe Newell is running it.
I'm moreso fearing the day Gabe isn't running Valve anymore.

Really disappointing news, but I almost exclusively play games on my Switch and Switch 2 anyway, so I'm not too personally shaken by it.

When you think about it, this just means that there will be no such thing as retrogaming for the current generation of games...
Re: Sony to end physical PlayStation game disc production in January 2028
Very concerning news for the long-term preservation of the future generations of games. I don't buy new Sony systems since PS4 and decisions like this don't really help. I never gave up on the physical format as long it's an option. If it's exclusively digital, I turn my attention to Steam if that same game content it isn't even on GOG. If Nintendo is smart they won't follow the same route (I hope).

It also announced earlier this week that all Studio Canal content will be wiped off their server, including stuff you've already bought.Fifo wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2026 7:21 pm Today, Sony published a blog post announcing they’re going to end manufacturing physical media for PlayStation.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call the endgame. You will own nothing and you will be happy.

I've heard rumors that the next-generation X-Box won't be having a disc drive. That would leave just Nintendo still dealing physical copies if that turned out to be true, and while I too hope Nintendo won't go that route, I'm not feeling that optimistic sadly. Not really into the idea of getting everything digital, I prefer to hold the copy of the game I want in my hands, thanks.
This could be trouble for second-hand game stores too. Yikes.Hunchman801 wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2026 10:53 pm When you think about it, this just means that there will be no such thing as retrogaming for the current generation of games...

As unfortunate as that sounds, slowly every console dev (and maybe even game dev) will start following this path. Pirez is right, we truly have reached the endgame.Pirez wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2026 6:56 amIt also announced earlier this week that all Studio Canal content will be wiped off their server, including stuff you've already bought.Fifo wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2026 7:21 pm Today, Sony published a blog post announcing they’re going to end manufacturing physical media for PlayStation.

I've heard the rumors as well, and I, too, hope that at least Nintendo stays the course with physical games. Even if it means using Game-Key Cards (which, while not as favorable as full cartridges, doesn't feel as rage-inducing to me as it has to others; heck, it didn't stop me from pre-ordering Retold's physical edition), I'd much rather take that over nothing but code-in-a-box releases. The Jonster wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2026 5:23 pm I've heard rumors that the next-generation X-Box won't be having a disc drive. Buying a "license" to play a game has never sounded great to me, since that implies that the license can get "revoked" without a refund whenever the company feels like it. I'd like to actually own games that I spend money on, thank you very much!

Music is also something that generates and moves a lot of money, and most artists derive a large portion of their income from digital streams (Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, etc.). Since music is now much more accessible to everyone, artists are able to release CDs and vinyl records for those who want a physical copy of their work. What am I getting at with all this? Basically, they’re phasing out the physical format just because they feel like it.
It's (yet another) anti-consumer move by PlayStation, which is willing to make the stupidest move possible just to keep the competition alive. First of all, it would be nice if they didn't include free to play games with microtransactions in their digital download statistics, but hey, I get that they use them to inflate their numbers. Second, do they really think their digital store is THAT good? You have games from 5 years ago that STILL COST €70, are you telling me that people prefer that to paying more than half the price for the physical copy, or buying it used? Not to mention that their return and cancellation policy is terrible (to put it mildly). All this while keeping in mind that digital options on PC, while not perfect, are 50 million times better than the junk PlayStation has.
Because what they're doing with their store is also fantastic... Announcing this at the same time they're announcing that the PS3 and PS Vita stores are closing! The person in charge of this deserves a promotion. Because now, anything you've bought digitally on PS3 and PS Vita, how long will you be able to play it? How long will you be able to download it? Because their little statement doesn't say it outright, but you'll understand that downloading the games you've bought isn't something that seems permanent. I’d like to point out that this is a company that has removed movies purchased by users due to licensing issues, so I think they’re capable of doing the same with games.
I'd like to share a quick final thought... In the past, consoles were a more convenient and affordable option for gaming compared to a PC. PCs were more powerful, but they were more expensive and required tweaking the settings to get optimal performance. Right now, with console prices on the rise, paid online services, and games limited to digital licenses, what reasons are there to buy a console instead of a PC or a Steam Machine? Sony has made some very questionable decisions, but this has been the last straw. If they keep up with these shitty policies, PC will probably be my next gaming platform.

What I'm saying doesn't mean that the digital format should cease to exist. Every once in a while, like when you see a comet in the sky, PlayStation has some really great deals in its store that are truly worth it. You also have to keep in mind that many indie games don't get a physical release until they've proven to be somewhat successful. A prime example is Hollow Knight... And I'm not sure if it's concerning that their physical edition is much nicer than those of top tier games, like GTA 5, which doesn't even come with a map in its PS5 edition anymore.PlayStation wrote:[...]To ease the transition, players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future.
