Skins are alternative options which can be used to modify the appearance of a character in Rayman M and Rayman Raving Rabbids. They usually serve as aesthetic options only, and have little or no bearing to the plot in which they feature in.

Rayman M / Rayman Arena

Skins are unlocked in Rayman M and Arena. In the PC/PlayStation 2 version of Rayman M, only half of the available characters (Globox, Henchman 800, the Teensies, and Henchman 1000) are able to unlock up to three skins, but in the GameCube/Xbox version of Rayman Arena, all competitors can get additional skins: all default characters aside from Rayman (Globox, the Teensies, Razorbeard, and Henchman 800) unlock up to four skins, all characters that need to be unlocked (Dark Globox, Tily, Razorwife, and Henchman 1000) can get up to three skins, and Rayman only gets one additional skin.

In the PC/PlayStation 2 version of the game, each skin changes the background beat for the character's theme to the environment it is most suited to. For example, if Globox is using his strawberry skin (an Advanced League skin) and is racing in the Extreme League, then the skin will change the beat from the Extreme League to the Advanced League. The beat for the Extreme League racing is typically fast and mechanical (given the Extreme League's factory setting), while the beat for the Advanced League is light and watery (given the Advanced League's lagoon setting). However, if the skin is used in a League that normally uses that skin's beat, it will change to the Beginner League's beat (thumping in the background). The skins do not have this effect on battles.

The PlayStation adaptation, Rayman Rush, claims that there are skins included in the game, however, no skins are known to be accessible, and characters only have their one normal skin.

Rayman

Rayman has no alternate skins in the PC and PlayStation 2 versions of Rayman M. In the GameCube and Xbox versions of Rayman Arena, Rayman's only alternate skin is Dark Rayman, a character exclusive to these versions of the game. The Dark Rayman skin is unlocked when completing the Master League in Obstacle Racing, Time Attack, Total Fight and Freeze Combat.

Razorbeard

Razorbeard has no alternate skins in the PC/PlayStation 2 version, but in the GameCube/Xbox version, players can unlock up to four alternate skins for him.

  • The first skin is him covered everywhere with very dark navy blue, apart from his buckle, which is gold, and his eyes, which are glowing red.
  • The second skin is all of his clothes are coloured blue and white in stripes, his hat is completely blue, apart from the skull and crossbones which is white, he also has a slight shade of blue on his head.
  • The third is all his body rusty with clothes colored red.
  • The fourth is his hat and clothes all in black.

Globox

Globox has three alternate skins in the PC/PlayStation 2 version of Rayman M.

  • His first skin is modeled after a strawberry, consisting of a red body with yellow spots, and a yellowish green head. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the lagoon-themed Advanced League.
  • His second skin is modeled after Rayman; he is seen wearing Rayman's shirt and neckerchief, which do not fit over his gut, and has Rayman's orange-peach skin color, and his hair. His feet also get the same colors as Rayman's shoes. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the pirate-themed Expert League. This becomes his third skin in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.
  • His third skin is all green with scales and a leaf-like collar, making him look similar to Kermit the Frog of The Muppets. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the factory-themed Extreme League. This skin is not available in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.

In Rayman Arena, he has two additional skins.

  • His first additional skin (placed between his strawberry and Rayman skins) has him wearing an all-yellow pajama onesie with a blue floral pattern. Interestingly, this skin shows up in promotional art for Rayman M alongside the other Rayman M skins for Globox; while it was also found in the data for the PC/Playstation 2 version, it went unused for that version.
  • His second additional skin (replacing his leaf-like skin from Rayman M) has him wearing a white and black striped jacket and pants, a white shirt and a black tie, in an homage to the title character of Tim Burton's film Beetlejuice.

There were also a couple of entirely unused skins for Globox:

  • The first unused skin, found in the data for the PC/PlayStation 2 version, is of an orange-peach color with many holes and ink-like spots, as well as a large, ink-like spiral on his belly; his eyes are also half-lidded and cross-eyed.
  • The second unused skin, found in the data for the GameCube/Xbox version, appears to be a parody on Superman from DC Comics: he wears a light blue shirt with a red and yellow logo including a red letter "G", blue pants, and red cape, belt, and shoes.

Henchman 800

Henchman 800 has three alternate skins in the PC/PlayStation 2 version of Rayman M.

  • His first skin is a more robotic, green and gray skin with dents and exposed wiring. His right eye is replaced with a smaller, yellow eye, and his left eyesocket is replaced with a round, red, scoper-esque display with a white reticle. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the lagoon-themed Advanced League.
  • His second skin is gold and rusted brown, with withered sleeves. His eyes are scowling with black sclera and red glowing pupils. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the pirate-themed Expert League. It had an unused version in which the rusted brown appears much redder; this version eventually becomes his third skin in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.
  • His third skin uses wooden plating as well as grayish blue sleeves, pantlegs and eyepatch. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the factory-themed Extreme League. This skin is not available in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena. It also had an unused version in which the grayish blue parts appear green.

In Rayman Arena, he has two additional skins.

  • His first additional skin (placed between his green-gray and gold-rusted skins) is entirely silver, aside from a couple of red and white stripes and a red Robo-Pirate sigil on a white cloth on its torso and back, with holes in his arms and face; something resembling a green, angry-looking eye is glowing from within the holes on the right side of his face.
  • His second additional skin (replacing his wooden skin from Rayman M) is copper-colored with black and green LCD displays, six holes on his muzzle and a single, round, green display replacing his eyes.

Teensies

The Teensies have three alternate skins in the PC/PlayStation 2 version of Rayman M.

  • Their first skin is them wearing cream and green robes, a green and purple-feathered crown, and red skin with green markings. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the lagoon-themed Advanced League. This becomes their third skin in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.
  • Their second skin is them wearing blue and pink robes and a pink hat. They still have a white skin but have larger, squinted eyes and black hair. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the pirate-themed Expert League. It had an unused version in which the pink hat is replaced by a teal and purple crown; this version was eventually used in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.
  • Their third League skin is them wearing bright yellow leopard skin robes and dark red robes, and a pink-feathered crown (held together with another leopard skin), and their skin is brown with white markings. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the factory-themed Extreme League. This becomes their first skin in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.

In Rayman Arena, they have one additional skin.

  • Their additional skin is similar to their second skin, but with orange hues instead of blue and pink; their skin color becomes orange as well. The orange hat they're wearing also bears a closer resemblance to the pink hat from their Rayman M skin, as opposed to the blue crown from Rayman Arena.

Henchman 1000

Henchman 1000 has three alternate skins in all versions of Rayman M and Rayman Arena.

  • His first skin is a fine silver body with a gold head and accents, a purple hat and legs, and his sclera are magenta; these are erroneously depicted as yellow in his mugshot for the battle modes in the PC/PlayStation 2 version of Rayman M. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the lagoon-themed Advanced League. This becomes his second skin in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.
  • His second skin is a yellow and scarlet red paint job. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the pirate-themed Expert League. This becomes his third skin in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.
  • His third skin is yellow and green paint job with black dots over his body, and a brown face with wonky eyes. Using this skin in races in the PC/PlayStation 2 version will override the background beat with that of the factory-themed Extreme League. This becomes his first skin in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena.

It is entirely possible in the PC/PlayStation 2 version of Rayman M to have any or all of Henchman 1000's alternate skins unlocked before unlocking his default skin, due to how League progression and skin rewards are structured. Since the progression in the GameCube/Xbox versions of Rayman Arena is structured differently, and the other unlockable characters in the PC/PlayStation 2 version do not have additional skins, this uniquely makes Henchman 1000 the only character in the game where this can happen.

Tily

Tily has no alternate skins in the PC/PlayStation 2 version, but in the GameCube/Xbox version, players can unlock up to three alternate skins for her.

  • Her first skin is a slightly more dark cream color with purple swirls all over her body, purple hair, and slanted eyes with purple eyeshadow and visible eyelashes; this skin is reminiscent of Ly.
  • Her second skin consists of a dark blue suit and mask with a lightning pattern, and dark blue hair.
  • Her third skin has Tily wear a purple striped outfit and purple hair.

Data within a prototypical GameCube demo for Rayman Arena includes a skin for Tily that wound up unused. It appears similar to her third alternate skin, but Tily's hair appears orange like in her default appearance, the purple stripe pattern is much darker and does not extend to her legs, and her outfit appears much yellower. Her soles also feature paw pads.

Razorwife

Razorwife has no alternate skins in the PC/PlayStation 2 version, but in the GameCube/Xbox version, players can unlock up to three alternate skins for her.

  • Her first skin has her hairdo made blonde without a headband, the frame of her sunglasses are silver and her dress is made platinum white, with a dark blue dress underneath.
  • Her second skin also has a blonde hairdo, but with a red headband, sunglasses and earrings. She also wears a yellow bra and a fiery red and yellow skirt.
  • Her third skin has her hairdo, sunglasses, dress and shoe dark blue, and her earrings, fingers and legs a grayish dark blue.

Dark Globox

Dark Globox has three alternate skins in the GameCube/Xbox version version of Rayman Arena.

  • His first skin is a blueish cyan, making him look very similar to Globox.
  • His second skin is a bright red, making him look very similar to Globette from Rayman Rush. Coincidentally, this skin also resembles Red Globox, Globox's original appearance introduced in Rayman Origins.
  • His third skin is a very dark navy with a dark purple stomach and red sclera.

Rayman Raving Rabbids

In Rayman Raving Rabbids there are several costume sets, each with four different parts which can be equipped. The costume sets are:

  • Rayman (default costume)
  • Gothic
  • Granny
  • Disco (this costume may have inspired Funky Ray)
  • Rock 'n' Roll (dressed as American rock 'n' roll superstar Elvis Presley)
  • Gangsta
  • Dee-Jay
  • Raymaninho
  • Bunny
  • Caramba (this costume may have inspired Ray of the Dead)

The Game Boy Advance version

After Rayman defeats a boss, he is awarded with a medal that represents a new costume he will be able to change into. Each costume gives him a new ability, while making him not being able to use any old ones like using his helicopter.

Image Name Description
Gangster Has a very powerful jump, enabling Rayman to break or smash certain elements on the ground.
Punk Can glue objects or enemies with the help of his chewing gum.
Grandmother Drops carrots on the ground, which distract the Rabbids while they eat them.

Funky Has a glowing fist, even stronger than Rayman's fully charged fist.

The Nintendo DS version

The Nintendo DS version of Rayman Raving Rabbids features multiple costumes which give Rayman certain abilities to help clear obstacles in the levels. The costumes are equipped when standing on a magical stone with the symbol corresponding to the costume. Each costume has a specific color and element.

In the challenges, they are switched around when the player presses a button that is assigned to a certain costume.

  • Granny (Earth): Creates a giant boulder that can be pushed and then jumped on to reach higher places. Enemies can be squashed while it is being pushed. In the challenge stages, it is used to break, press and drag boxes that are marked with a green X or O.
  • Punk (Fire): Generates bombs that Rayman can carry and throw at either enemies or at red doors that only bombs can destroy. In the challenge stages, it is used to burn away chains that hold wooden planks up or down, as well as destroying all enemies including a red demon that only fire can destroy.
  • Disco (Wind): Makes clouds visible enough to walk on. It is used in the challenge stages to turn fans that move wooden planks up, down or forward.
  • Rock 'n' Roll (Ice): Equips Rayman with three blocks of ice that are used to freeze flaming walls, weak bridges and enemies. In the challenge stages, it freezes sandpits, geysers and waterfalls for Rayman to walk on.
