Darkroots, also known simply as Roots, are invincible plant enemies found in Rayman Origins, Rayman Jungle Run, Rayman Legends, Rayman Fiesta Run, Rayman Adventures and Rayman Mini. They are similar to nettles, other root-like enemies from the Rayman series.
In Rayman Origins
In Rayman Origins, Darkroots feature as one of the various creatures and plants to have risen from the Land of the Livid Dead to invade the Glade of Dreams. They are sent by a granny, along with a group of nightmarish Darktoons and Psychlops.
Darkroots can vary in appearance: while they all share a common tentacle-like shape, their colouration and detailing can differ. They can be found in black, purple, grey and red varieties, and some can be seen with appendages extruding from the main body.
Black Darkroots are covered with eyes and appear in the Jibberish Jungle, the Sea of Serendipity, the Mystical Pique and the Land of the Livid Dead. Purple Darkroots look identical, save for the color, and are found in the Sea of Serendipity, the Mystical Pique and the Ticklish Temples. Grey Darkroots appear in the Desert of Dijiridoos and the Grumbling Grottos, where they are found inside the giant didgeridoos. Red Darkroots, seemingly representing arteries, can be found inside El Stomacho in the level My Heartburn's for You.
Darkroots can be encountered as static obstacles, but some will bend in place, requiring careful and skilled movement in order to prevent contact being made, which will deal damage to the heroes. Some can even be seen emerging from the ground, and thus require good timing to avoid. They can also emerge and prevent backtracking in a level by blocking off areas once passed.

In Rayman Jungle Run
In Rayman Jungle Run, black Darkroots identical to those found in Rayman Origins can be seen in various levels, playing the same role as obstacles for the heroes to avoid.
In Rayman Legends
In Rayman Legends, Darkroots return, but with greater variations in appearance. They have spread throughout the Glade of Dreams during the 100-year nap that the heroes had taken after Rayman Origins. They can be found in every world of the game, playing the same role as harmful obstacles that will try to damage the heroes by out-manoeuvring them.
The main variety of Darkroot in this game is green with yellow spikes, and unlike their Rayman Origins brethren, they sport no eyes whatsoever. In the Back to Origins levels, the Darkroots are either the new green versions, or the grey Darkroots that could be found in Tricky Winds. In Freaking Flipper, the Darkroots that appear resemble their original counterparts from Rayman Origins, but without the eyes.

In Rayman Fiesta Run
In Rayman Fiesta Run, black Darkroots identical to those found in Rayman Origins can be seen in various levels, in addition to a new type of dark-red Darkroots exclusive to this game. Both types play the same role as in past titles, acting as obstacles that will damage the heroes should they come into contact with them.
In Rayman Adventures
In Rayman Adventures, green Darkroots identical to those found in Rayman Legends can be seen in various levels.
